Minutes of Core Group Meeting
11th October 2007
Present: Adrian Coltman (Acting Chair), Mike Betteridge, Adam & Carol Bull.
1. Apologies for Absence
Martin Calvert, Mervyn & Joan Clayton, Sian Dodderidge, Peter Foulston, Paul Ellis.
2. Minutes of the Meeting Held 20th Sep 2007
Agreed as a true record.
3. Matters Arising
- Tree Cutting
Martin has received an e-mail from Steve Allen stating that the Council plan to cut back the trees on Gledhow Valley Road and clear epicormic shoots. They need an open top bus to carry out the work and this is proving difficult to get.
4. Correspondence
None, presumably due to the postal strike.
5. 106 Grant Update
The Group has ordered 2 expanding barriers, 2 tampers, a dirty water pump, a scraper, a strimmer, and nails at a cost of £488. Money has also been spent on work being carried out in the woods on footpaths and on the island.
6. Action Mornings
The Action Morning on Sunday 14th October will consist of path work near Gledhow Valley and Allerton Grange Way and topping up in some areas. Please meet at Allerton Grange Way near the gas sub-station. Four tonnes of stone will be delivered resulting in a long barrow run to the work area.
The Group need to think of activities specifically aimed at children on Action Mornings. Mike stressed that they were especially interested in the "pick-up sticks" at the talks he has been doing, so thinks they would be happy to do litter picking.
The Action Morning due on Saturday 17th November will consist of putting in 3 new benches. Please meet near the horses' field.
December's Action Morning will involve decking and footpath work. Please meet at Allerton Grange Way near the gas sub-station.
Next Action Mornings
- Sunday 14th October 2007
- Saturday 17th November 2007
- Saturday 8th December 2007
7. 157 Gledhow Valley Road Planning Permission
An application has been submitted to the planning department for a 4 bedroom detached house. The Group agreed that this was better than the six flats previous proposed and would be satisfactory provided no other building work was added at a later date.
8. Information Boards
Adam apologised for lack of progress, and explained that he has been struggling just to keep up with ongoing maintenance of the FGVW web site. He stressed that he would be happy to pass the work on to someone else if required, otherwise it could be some time before completion.
9. Carriageway
Joan has an old map that shows the original path of the carriageway. The Group has investigated and found that the old course is still there but covered in undergrowth. The carriageway constructed in the eighteenth century was well built and allowed for proper drainage but over the years the path has been moved and the natural water course has altered, which is now causing problems.
The carriageway needs clearing of undergrowth and the drainage channels need emptying of silt and debris . Mike suggested that it would be an ideal task for a group of volunteers from a company looking for a team building, otherwise the Group could do it themselves. A fallen tree could be removed by Justine. A missing drainage cover also needs to be replaced.
The Group hope that this work would revert the carriage way back to its historical status and fix the current drainage problems. Martin is meeting a council representative next week to discuss this and other work to be completed in the woods.
10. AOB
- Tesco FunDay Grant
Tesco hasn't sent in the grant promised for the FunDay yet. Martin agreed has e-mailed them.
- Core Group Meetings
Adam stated that we need to change references to the Old Police Club to the Gledhow Sports & Social Club.
Mike suggested letting Paul the landlord of the Gledhow Sports & Social Club know when we will be holding meetings so that he can let us know in advance if there are any functions booked for that night. Mike agreed to let Paul know the date of our next meeting.
- New FGVW Postcards
Adam showed the Group two new postcards that he has had printed. Some have already been sold to Radish. This takes the number of current postcard designs to seven.
- FGVW on the BBC
The BBC are showing The Nature of Britain programme on BBC1 on Wednesday at 9pm for 8 weeks. The Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods have a 15 second slot on one of the programmes, although we don't know which.
- Drain Cover Needed
Mike stressed that the need a new drain cover from the council for the woods as a matter of urgency.
