Minutes of Core Group Meeting
10th July 2008
Present: Martin Calvert (Chair), Mervyn & Joan Clayton, Adam & Carol Bull, Paul Ellis, Mike Betteridge.
1. Apologies for Absence
Sian Dodderidge, Adrian Coltman, Peter Foulston, Anthony Rouse, Claire Standish, Adam Wilks.
2. Minutes of the Meeting Held 23rd June 2008
Agreed as a true record.
3. Matters Arising
- St Matthew's Fair
The event takes place on Saturday 12th July between 2pm and 4pm. The Group can set up their display and stall from 10.30am. Adam, Carol, Joan, Mervyn and Mike agreed to attend and meet at about 1pm.
4. Correspondence
Dorothy and Jodie Carter have received a donation from Joyce Bond.
The Group has received information on the Leeds Wildlife Discovery Days.
Two sets of minutes have been received from the Gledhow Valley Conservation Group.
An Open Day will be held by the Roundhay Planning Forum on Saturday 13th July 10am to 4pm at Kerr Mackie Primary School. It is open to all and is for people concerned with inappropriate planning applications in the area.
The Bradford Botany Group has sent details of rare plants found in the area and a Floral/Fungi newsletter, via Steve Joul.
The Group has received a list of plants that butterflies are attracted to.
Information has been received on this year's Community City Pride Awards. Mike agreed to look through the information to see if it is worth the Group applying again.
The Group has been invited to attend a Friends of Middleton Park event on Sunday 7th September 2pm to 4pm.
Emma Trickett from Leeds City Council has sent copies of the Leeds Countryside Volunteer Newsletter.
5. 106 Grant Update
Unfortunately, Fred Duff could not attend the most recent meeting due to other commitments. Bob Bradley attended in his place. The Group discussed working on the jetty with him. The Group agreed to work together with the Council and the work will start in August.
Of the £7,700 available to the Group £4,800 has been spent so far. Martin and Mervyn had a separate site meeting with Chris Bolam to discuss how the rest of the money could be spent.
6. Action Mornings
The benches won't be delivered in time for the July Action Morning. Volunteers are asked to meet at the meadow. It is planned to put some decking in where the rain water is washing away the path, clear path edges, plant in the meadow, dig around one of the benches, take out an elder plant, and litter pick.

Clearing the Bath House ready for the Heritage Open Day.
Volunteers to meet at the Bath House.
- Sunday 28th September 2008
Putting in benches, litter picking and planting wild flowers in the meadow.
Volunteers to meet in the meadow at the end of the lake on Gledhow Valley Road.
- Sunday 26th October 2008
This Action Morning may change to Saturday!
The meadow may need cutting if this is not completed in September. The jetty gabions will be done if the Council completes the initial work with the digger in August.
- Sunday 30th November 2008
A new section of the path will be completed near the boggy area near Gledhow Lane.
- Sunday 14th December 2008
Path work near the Gledhow Valley Road/Gledhow Valley Lane junction.
7. FGVW Family FunDay 2008
Paul provided an update on the expenses for the FunDay this year. The Group spent a lot more than in previous years and it was agreed that a budget should be drawn up for next year. It was suggested that the surplus of just over £1,000 should be earmarked to help fund next year's event.
Adrian to update the Group on the comments received from the public at the FunDay concerning ideas for the woods, at a future meeting.
8. Heritage Open Day
The Group agreed to open the Bath House on Sunday 14th September between 12pm and 4pm. Adam agreed to e-mail everyone to ask for home baking for the event. The Group agreed that it would be a good time to sell the new Christmas cards. It was agreed to use 3 pop up gazebos. Adam agreed to design a poster to put up in the woods promoting the event and Mike agreed to distribute some leaflets at the Chapel Allerton Festival.
9. AOB
- Roundhay Farmers Market
Each month the Roundhay Farmers Market invites a local community group to advertise the work that they do and sell products. This month the Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods has been invited. The Group will attend the market on Saturday 19th July between 9am and 12.30pm, near the Oakwood Clock. Adam and Carol volunteered to attend, with support from Joan, Mervyn, and Paul.
- First Aid
Claire has been looking into first aid courses and has found lots of different courses. She is going to consult the Rangers to see which course they recommend.
- Name Tags
Joan brought in a stationery order book and the Group discussed different types of name tags to be used at events. The Group agreed on the clip and pin design and Paul agreed to order a set.
- Mike's Photos
Mike has been busy taking photos of plants and flowers in the woods. Adam agreed to put them on the web site when possible and has also used them for a new game he is going to try out at St Matthew's Fair.
- Information Boards
The Information Boards have been on hold because Adam's time has been taken up with work relating the FGVW FunDay, St Matthew's Summer Fair, Heritage Open Day, etc.
