1. Apologies for Absence

Mike Betteridge, Paul Ellis, Adrian Coltman.

2. Minutes of the Meeting Held 24th June 2011

Agreed as a true record.

3. Matters Arising

None.

4. Correspondence

Christine Osborne (of Gledhow Valley Conservation Area Group) updated the Group on developments with the illegal four storey house built in place of the proposed garage at 11 Old Park Road. The building work is in breach of the agreed planning permission. The Roundhay Planning Forum would like to invite all local community groups to pool together to write and add weight to the continued opposition.

The Planning Panel is looking to negotiate a compromise, however the building has become unlawful. The local groups are concerned that planning regulations and conservation area guidance reports are worthless if they are not adhered to. This could lead to others flouting planning regulations within the conservation area. They are looking for as much support as possible from local groups are as individuals.

The Group agreed to support the case but left the decision to Martin as to whether we support as a Group or as individuals.

5. Action Mornings

  • Sunday 22 May
The Action Morning was well attended and a lot of work was completed. Work began on the turnaround area and far end of the path. Preparatory work was done so that the Woodcraft Folk could come and do some wildflower planting on Tuesday.

Future Action Mornings

  • Sunday 24 July
Work to be started on the top path. Vegetation around the top path also needs cutting back. Dorothy has started work on this already. Stone due to be delivered. There is some planting to do near the jetty and overhanging branches to be cut back near the carriageway. Balsam bashing to take place on the island. Volunteers should meet at the jetty by the lake.
  • Sunday 21 August
Meeting place to be confirmed at a later date.
  • Saturday 1 October
Meeting place to be confirmed at a later date.
  • Sunday 6 November
Meeting place to be confirmed at a later date.
  • Sunday 4 December
Meeting place to be confirmed at a later date.

6. Groundwork Application

The application has passed through to the next stage following the site visit. They are looking to see if one of the paths could be adapted for wheelchair use, but it could be too steep. The proposal is going through to the next planning stage.

7. Roundhay Live

A large REAP event took place on Saturday 18 June 2011. It was a chance for all local community groups to get together to promote the "sustainable community". Joan and Mervyn attended on behalf of the Group. There were a few teething problems as there was no tent allocated for the Group (despite the fact that the tents belonged to FGVW!) and no communication regarding timings of allowing vehicles on the field. However, it was a successful day and the Group are happy to support it again next year. It was suggested that there be a 2-3 week gap between our FunDay and this event.

The Group loaned marquees and pop-up gazebos for the event, and agreed that they were happy to do so again. One gazebo was damaged on the day but the Group were compensated.

8. AOB

  • Strimmer Training
The local council has a small number of places for a training course on strimming. Joan agreed to put forward Mervyn, Trevor, Martin and Geoff for the next course.
  • Insurance
The Council has also asked the Group about our insurance with BCTV and what it covered. They have suggested that a Council representative may not need to be present at Action Days any more.
  • Christmas Cards
Adam brought in photos for the Group to choose which ones should be used for the next Christmas cards. We can only buy the same style of cards as last year if there is an offer on so the Group needs to have the pictures ready for when this happens. Mervyn agreed to send Adam some additional pictures for consideration.
  • FunDay 2012
Trevor suggested getting some basic clay modelling tools for the next FunDay. Adam suggested Noah's Ark Exotic Animals who he had seen at St Gemma's Garden Party. They let children (and adults) handle exotic animals such as spiders, snakes and lizards.
  • FGVW Pond (Sunder's Pond)
Geoff highlighted a drainage problem with the pond. Many of the Group members have been clearing the channel to allow drainage on a regular basis. This is to be looked into. Martin has planted wildflower turf around the pond to prevent the embankment from being kicked into the pond.
