1. Apologies for Absence

David Miles.

2. Minutes of the Meeting Held 30th January 2025

Agreed as a true record.

3. Matters Arising

  • Martin has received an e-mail from someone in Bingley who is about to start a project with Groundworks. He has asked us for feedback based on our experiences. Steve agreed to speak to him.

4. Action Mornings

  • Sunday 9 February 2025
There was a good turnout of over 20 volunteers who met up at the lake jetty to fill the dead hedge and improve the wet footpath and pond area.
  • Sunday 16 March 2025
Volunteers to meet at Beck Pasture to tidy a felled tree, rake the new pond area and litter picking. It was also agreed to look at removing the plastic guards from several areas including the steps at the top of "Hilda's Walk" and near Lincoln Drive.

5. Trustees Update

There was a Trustees meeting in February.

Steve produced the accounts that showed how all the grants matched up with the multiple invoices. The Group's funds are looking healthy with over £13K in the general account and over £39K in the "restricted funds" account. The Group has also received the first grant through for the footpath work.

An AGM will need to be held in June. Work has started on the Trustees Report for the Charity Commission. This will also need to go to external auditors.

The insurance quote from Zurich has increased a lot. Steve has reduced the level of cover so we can no longer cover large events and the price has reduced accordingly.

The Trustees also discussed the Catholic Diocese field but felt possibe proposals needed input from the Steering Group.

6. Project to Eradicate Bamboo and Knotweed and Create Wetland off Gledhow Lane

This project is now nearing completion. There is just some planting to do in the wetland area and this needs to be done quickly before the swans start to nest.

7. Project to Refurbish Footpaths

At the last meeting the Group identified the 3 paths that should be refurbished as a priority. The two main paths to be restored should be the Carriageway all the way to the Garages entrance on Gledhow Wood Road and the path on the opposite side of Gledhow Valley Road to the Bath House up to the road crossing opposite "Martin's meadow".

Third in priority is the path through the woods parallel to Allerton Grange Way. It was felt the "Lord Mayor's Path" is low priority.

Adrian and David M met with Wade's Charity to walk through the woods and look at the paths for the project. The Group had a discussion on the width of the paths and thought 1.5m was more suitable to the woodland than the 2m normally used in parks. There was a request put forward that the proposed bid should be reviewed by members of the Group prior to submission.

8. Water Quality Monitoring

David Miles e-mailed a copy of the latest draft of the water monitoring report. Paul Hayes from Leeds University Business School is also looking at it from the perspective of maximising impact with external bodies such as the water industry and politicians.

Steve was interested in the E. coli results and wondered if testing in different areas could determine if this was due to human or duck/swan waste.

9. The Diocese Field

The Trustees discussed the Catholic Diocese owned field following the various meetings with David M, churchgoers Mark and Mary Clayton and Michael Churley. The Group has approached the Diocese in the past to ask if they would be willing to sell the field to the Group but this was rejected in 2015. The Group approached them recently to see if they would be willing to sell or if they would consider a peppercorn rent type arrangement.

The Trustees were looking for a minimum 20 year term and expecting to spend 2 or 3 action mornings per year maintaining the field. However, the church was looking for a one year notice period and a plan of work had been produced.

The Trustees consulted with the Steering Group who decided that this was not what they wanted. A vote was taken and there was a unanimous decision to not proceed with this any further.

10. AOB

  • David Miles e-mailed the Group with a list of questions regarding the Green Fair. Martin to respond with the Groups response:
    - The Bath House is owned by Leeds City Council so the Green Fair committee will need to obtain permission from them and source volunteers in order to open it on the day. FGVW will be opening the Bath House as usual on Open Heritage Day in September.
    - FGVW volunteers will be opening Beck Pasture on the Green Fair day and would like a stall to sell event merchandise near to the Pasture.
    - FGVW are supporting the Green Fair but are not a partner so our preference would be not to have the logo on any Green Fair advertising material.
  • It was noted that people have been digging up wild garlic in the woods.
  • Gledhow Sports and Social Club are holding an event on 21 June 2025 and asked the Group if they would like a stall at the event. The Group said yes.
