1. Apologies for Absence

Adam & Carol Bull.

2. Minutes of the Meeting Held 17th July 2025

Agreed as a true record.

3. Matters Arising

  • Chapel Allerton Festival was a very successful event which raised a lot of money for the Group and more importantly allowed us to talk to many people about the work we do.
  • Martin Calvert and Adrian Coltman restocked tools and wood for repairs in the woods.
  • The BCS (meadow cutter) has been serviced and a new cutting blade attached.
  • Group agreed to buy mixed flower seed for the next Action Morning for Beck Pasture.
  • NPower Grant - David Miles has contacted them to ask for an extension due to the need to undertake further work on the wetland area, and the drought has meant that planting has not been possible. There is approx. £14,500 left for works. There are ongoing discussions with Groundwork about the use of the funds to finish the project. The Group agreed to an add-on project creating a wet area next to the new pond using overflow from said pond. The cost would be in the region of £6,000.

4. Action Mornings

  • Sunday 27 July 2025
Work took place in the new wetland area and debris was cleared from the burnt-out car. The burnt-out dead hedge was rebuilt and the dead hedge started during the Green Fair was completed. The "Yorkshire Water steps" were cleared as well as the area in general.
  • Sunday 27 July 2025
Work will include clearing Beck Pasture, planting wildflower seeds, cutting back hedges and hedge work in the field if time allows.

5. Trustees Update

There will be a meeting on Tuesday 9th September 2025.

6. Project to Refurbish Footpaths

David Miles had supplied a diagram of proposed routes and placements in the valley before the meeting as well as feedback from the Green Fair from those who responded to the survey on the day.

He will contact Woodlands Officer Lucy Clarke regarding a meeting between all parties to move this aspect of the project on.

Jeremy had costed project to be approx. £170,000, including bridge work and woodland management. It was agreed that it would be best if Leeds City Council would handle the funding and be the main conduit to reduce the workload on Steve Jones-Blackett. David Miles indicted that the most likely funding stream would through landfill tax and the window for applying for it had just opened.

7. Water Quality Monitoring

David Miles updated the Group that Jonathon Moxon from Leeds City Council would be contacting Yorkshire Water and the Environment Agency regarding a meeting and creating a development plan for Gledhow Valley Woods in response thee water monitoring report.

Steve Jones-Blackett raised concerns about the dredging of the far end of the lake and the possibility of a dramatic drop in the water level of the lake. David Miles agreed to email all parties and ensure when the work is done that FGVW are consulted and forewarned.

Steve Jones-Blackett raised concerns about E. coli and its testing, along with certain aspects of the sampling regime. David Miles replied that newer and better testing kits were being developed as well as a more far ranging sampling process. This would take a full two years of testing results to ensure a clear picture.

The response by Yorkshire Water to an enquiry by Fabian Hamilton was also discussed. The Group felt the need for any reply to be measured and considered.

8. Catholic Diocese Field Adjoining Beck Pasture

David Miles raised strong concerns over the decision in March not to proceed with investigations regarding the Catholic Diocese field adjoining Beck Pasture, the way the decision was communicated and the way the decision was made. He had proceeded with making enquires and formulating ideas and plans with third parties in ignorance of this decision.

A robust debate followed this when members of the core group expressed their views too.

It was agreed that at the next meeting David Miles would bring forward a direct and succinct proposal for the purchase of the field that members of the Steering Group could discuss then ratify. This could then be directly communicated to the Catholic Diocese for their response.

9. AOB

  • The homeless person on "Martin's Meadow" has been rehoused. Martin Calvert to contact Ian at Leeds City Council Parks and Countryside Service about removing debris from his campsite.
  • A tree next to the lake has honey fungus growing from the base of its trunk. Martin Calvert to inform Lucy Clarke, the Woodlands officer for Leeds City Council.

  • Action Morning - Sun 19 Oct 2025
