2006 - Red Lake
by Adam Bull
These photographs were taken on 3rd August 2006 and show blood-red patches on Gledhow Lake. The patches don't appear very often, and last only a day or two. They can cover large areas of the lake, and seem to happen during periods of warm weather.
Copies of these photos were sent to a Technical Specialist in Ecological Appraisal at the Environment Agency, who suggested that the patches were most likely due to planktonic algae... although this can only be confirmed by supplying a sample for analysis.
If you have any photos or stories about Gledhow Valley Woods which you would like to share, please contact us so we can add them to the site.
